Down Home

The place where my mother grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The place where my extended family lived. The place where a kid could be a kid, a boat ride on the Choptank was always available, where crabbing in the morning became dinner that night, where the kitchen was always a flurry of activity and love was abundant.  Trips "down home" as a kid were the best trips ever!! My grandmother was an amazing cook and baker.  She taught me so many things when I was with her. I spent many hours over the years with her and my mom in the kitchen and on the front porch swing. That swing holds many memories of laughter, singing, talking, crying, and just being real.

I have spent the majority of my life working in a career I love as a critical care nurse.  I left the hospital setting a few years ago to be at home with my children but continued working as a substitute nurse in the school district.  I have always loved to bake.  I find myself baking and teaching my children what I have learned.  I have always dreamed of owning my own baking business.

When I decided to open my home-based baking business, the name Down Home Sweets was the only choice.  Warmth, caring, a love of baking.  That’s been my motto since I started.   I learned to bake from wonderful women; my mom and both of my grandmothers. I also spent years making changes and molding their recipes into some of my own.  My hope is that when you choose Down Home Sweets to make treats for your special occasion, you can feel the attention that went into making your product.  I hope you will close your eyes for just a second, take a deep breath and imagine warm breezes blowing while you sit on the front porch swing and just feel happy.
